Outdoor Furniture Materials for Oceanfront Properties

Outdoor furniture and accessories are available in a variety of materials and finishes, however selecting the right pieces for coastal living is essential. The sun, salt and humidity will wear and distress typical furniture pieces.

The best way to protect your furniture is to cover it when not in use and overnight. Also, remove salt buildup by rinsing your furniture and thoroughly drying it with a soft cloth on a weekly basis. Be sure to avoid harsh cleaners.

Outdoor furniture materials for oceanfront properties:

Teak: Teak is an ultra-durable wood that will weather to a gray hue when left untreated. Use a special oil and stain often to retain the reddish-brown original color.

Maintenance: Wash teak with 50/50 solution of soap and water with a soft bristle brush to clean with. Apply a sealant to repel water infiltration.

Wrought Iron: Iron is going to rust. Should you select iron, buy powder-coated galvanized iron and treat all bare, rust spots as they happen.

Maintenance: Hose the furniture down and use mild liquid soap with a mild sponge to scrub away salt, sand, and dirt. Rinse off all of the soap and dry the furniture thoroughly. A spray wax may be applied for extra protection.

Cast Aluminum: This material is an excellent outdoor furniture choice for beachfront properties as it typically is rust-free and fade-free.

Maintenance: Hose the pieces off and clean the furniture with soapy water, rinse, and dry completely. A coat of wax may be used to repel potential water damage.

Outdoor Wicker: Rattan, bamboo and other like-materials don’t fare so well when exposed to the oceanfront elements. If you should use this, select a weather-resistant wicker.

Maintenance: Hose furniture down often and clean it with a mild soap.

Fabric: Accent fabrics, such as cushions and pillows, should be either polyester, vinyl or acrylic because they dry quickly and resist mildew.

Maintenance: Store fabric pieces inside when not in use.

With proper maintenance and the right materials, your furniture will last through the coastal elements.
